How colour conversion works
Supported input formats
You can type any of the following: a hex string like #4a4ae0 (with or
without the #), an rgb(r, g, b) function, an
hsl(h, s%, l%) function, or just three comma-separated numbers like
74, 74, 224 for RGB. The tool figures out which format you typed and
converts to all four.
HEX to RGB and back
A hex colour like #4a4ae0 is three pairs of two-digit hex numbers
representing red, green and blue on a 0-255 scale. Converting to RGB is just parsing
each pair. Going back rounds each channel to the nearest whole number.
HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness)
HSL describes colour as an angle on the colour wheel (0-360), a percentage of saturation (0 = grey, 100 = vivid), and a percentage of lightness (0 = black, 100 = white). The conversion uses the standard formulas from the CSS Color Level 4 specification.
CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black)
CMYK is used in printing. Each channel is a percentage of ink: 0% means no ink, 100% means full coverage. The conversion first goes from RGB to CMY by inverting each channel (1 - channel/255), then derives the K (black) value and rescales the other three.
Common uses
Designers converting colours between web (HEX/RGB/HSL) and print (CMYK), matching colours across tools and platforms, adjusting saturation or lightness precisely, and building consistent colour palettes.
