How GPA works
The grade point average is the sum of grade points for each course divided by the total credit hours. A course's grade points are its grade value on the chosen scale multiplied by its credits, so a 3-credit A weights three times as much as a 1-credit A.
The two scales
On the 4.0 scale, A is worth 4.0 and F is worth 0. On the 5.0 scale (often used for honors or Advanced Placement courses), each letter grade above F is worth one point more, so an A is 5.0. Grade cut-offs can vary by school â this calculator uses the common plus/minus values (A 4.0, A− 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B− 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C− 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, F 0.0).
Reading the answer
The headline GPA is rounded to two decimal places. Alongside it you get the total credit hours counted, the total grade points earned, and how many courses were included in the average.
