Private by design. This page has no backend. Your image is compressed by JavaScript running on your own device and is never sent anywhere.
How the compression works
This tool draws your image onto an HTML canvas element and exports it as a JPEG or WebP at the quality level you choose. Lower quality means the encoder discards more colour detail, which shrinks the file size. The preview shows the result at display resolution, so you can judge whether the quality trade-off is acceptable before you download.
Large images
If the source image is very large (over 2000 pixels on either side), the canvas is scaled down to fit within 2000 pixels before compression. This keeps memory usage reasonable across devices. If you need the full resolution, consider a desktop image editor.
Supported formats
The input can be any image your browser can read — JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, and most others. The output is always JPEG (or WebP if you choose it via the download button), since those formats support lossy compression. If you need to keep transparency, use the Image Format Converter to export as PNG instead.
How to use the Image Compressor
- Drop in a JPEG, PNG or WebP image, or click to choose one.
- Adjust the quality slider and watch the estimated size change.
- Download the compressed image.
Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my image get?
It depends on the image and the quality setting; lowering quality reduces size but can introduce visible artefacts.
Is my image uploaded?
No. Compression runs in your browser using a canvas, so the file never leaves your device.
Which formats can I compress?
JPEG, PNG and WebP input are supported, and the result is saved as a compressed image.
