What EMI means

EMI stands for Equated Monthly Instalment. It is the fixed amount you pay each month to fully repay a loan over a set term. Each payment covers interest first, with the rest reducing the principal. Early payments are mostly interest; later payments are mostly principal.

The formula

EMI = P * r * (1 + r)^n / ((1 + r)^n - 1) where P is the principal, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate divided by 12), and n is the total number of months. When the interest rate is zero, the formula simplifies to P / n.

What affects the payment

A higher principal or interest rate increases the payment. A longer term lowers the monthly payment but increases the total interest paid over the life of the loan.

How to use the Loan EMI Calculator
