Number to Words
Spell any number out in English words — the way a cheque or a contract writes it. Handles decimals, negatives and numbers up to billions.
The number
In words
Private by design. This page has no backend. The conversion runs on your own device and nothing is sent anywhere.
How the spelling works
The groups
The number is split into groups of three digits — units, thousands, millions,
billions — and each group is spelled in its own right before the scale word is added.
So 1,234,567 becomes "one million, two hundred and thirty-four thousand,
five hundred and sixty-seven".
The "and"
British English convention is followed: the word "and" appears after a hundred when the rest of the group is non-zero, so "two hundred and five" rather than "two hundred five". This is the style expected on cheques and contracts.
Decimals and negatives
A decimal point splits the number into a whole part and a fractional part. Each digit
of the fraction is named individually — 12.75 is "twelve point seven five"
— so amounts like currency are unambiguous. A leading minus is spelled
"minus".
Limits
Nothing above nine hundred and ninety-nine billion nine hundred and ninety-nine million nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine is supported in full; anything larger shows an error rather than a wrong spelling.
