How the generator works
Canvas rendering
The image is drawn onto an HTML <canvas> element using the
Canvas 2D API. The background is filled with a solid colour, then the label text
is centred on top. When you click "Download" the canvas is exported to a blob
in the format you chose (PNG, JPEG or WebP) and saved as a file.
Scale
Picking "2x" doubles the canvas dimensions while keeping the CSS display size the same, producing a Retina-ready image. The downloaded file will be twice the pixel dimensions you entered.
Formats
PNG is lossless and supports transparency — best for diagrams, UI mockups and anything with text. JPEG is lossy and smaller for photographs. WebP is modern, smaller than both, but not yet supported by every image viewer.
How to use the Placeholder Image Generator
- Enter the width and height you need.
- Pick a background colour and the text to show.
- Download the placeholder as a PNG.
Frequently asked questions
What size can the placeholders be?
Set any width and height, which is handy for designing layouts around real dimensions.
Can I change the text and colour?
Yes. Both the label and the background colour are editable.
Is the image generated on a server?
No. The PNG is drawn in your browser and downloaded directly.
