Text to Speech
Read any text aloud using the voices already installed on your device — with control over speed, pitch and volume.
Your text
The list comes from your operating system, not from this page.
Playback
Private by design. This page has no backend. The speech is produced by the voices installed on your own device — your text is never sent to a server, and no audio is recorded.
Where the voices come from
This page uses the speech synthesis your browser and operating system already provide, so the list of voices is not ours — it is whatever is installed on the machine you are sitting at. That is why the same text can sound quite different on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, and why a colleague may have voices you do not. Adding more is done in the operating system's own accessibility or language settings, not here.
Some voices are marked as available but are downloaded on demand the first time they are used, so the very first sentence can take a moment to start. Some are provided by the browser through a network service of its own; that is the browser's behaviour, not this page, which sends nothing anywhere.
Speed, pitch and volume
Speed runs from half pace to double. Most voices stay intelligible to about 1.5×, and dictation-quality voices further. Pitch shifts the voice up or down; not every voice honours it, and a few ignore it entirely. Volume is relative to your system volume rather than a replacement for it, so if you hear nothing at all, check the system mixer first.
Long text is split into sentences
Rather than handing the whole passage over in one go, the text is broken at sentence endings and read piece by piece. This is deliberate: several browsers cut a single long utterance off after about fifteen seconds, and speaking sentence by sentence avoids that entirely. It is also what makes the follow-along panel possible, since each sentence announces itself as it begins.
Follow along
The panel on the right shows your text with the sentence currently being spoken shaded, and the individual word highlighted where the browser reports word boundaries. Word-level highlighting is not supported everywhere; when it is missing the sentence shading still works.
Rough length
The estimate assumes about 165 words a minute at normal speed, scaled by the speed slider. It is an approximation for planning, not a measurement — the real duration depends on the voice, the punctuation and the language.
Common uses
Proof-reading by ear, which catches clumsy sentences that the eye skims over; resting your eyes while getting through an article; checking how a script sounds before recording it; and listening to notes while doing something else.
How to use the Text to Speech
- Paste or type the text you want read aloud.
- Choose a voice and adjust the rate, pitch and volume.
- Press play to hear it and follow along with the highlighted sentence.
Frequently asked questions
Which voices are available?
The voices already installed on your device or browser are used, so the list differs between Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.
Does it work offline?
Speech synthesis runs locally on your device, so it works without sending your text anywhere.
Why is there no sound?
Check the device volume and that a voice is selected, then press play again; some browsers need a click before audio can start.
