What lorem ipsum is for
Placeholder text lets you judge a layout without being distracted by what the words
say. It is deliberately not English: real copy pulls the eye into reading, and
repeated xxxx gives an unnaturally even texture. Lorem ipsum has the word
lengths and sentence rhythm of Latin prose, which is close enough to English to make
line breaks, leading and column widths look honest.
The vocabulary here is the traditional one — the mangled passage from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum that printers have used since the 1500s, together with the words from the standard at vero eos and neque porro quisquam continuations. The sentences themselves are assembled fresh each time, so they are not the same fifty words over and over.
The three units
Paragraphs gives whole blocks, each three to seven sentences long — the right unit for testing body copy. Sentences gives exactly the number you ask for, run together into one block, which suits captions and summaries. Words counts words rather than sentences and is what you want for headings, labels, buttons and anywhere a character budget matters.
The options
Start with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" pins the familiar opening in
place so the text is recognisable as placeholder at a glance; turn it off and every
sentence is generated. Commas inside sentences adds the sub-clauses
that give a paragraph its ragged, realistic shape — without them every sentence reads
as one flat run. Wrap in HTML tags puts each block inside
<p> ready to paste into a template. Blank line between
blocks controls whether paragraphs are separated by an empty line or sit
directly under one another.
Generate again
Changing an option keeps the same underlying text so you can see just the effect of that option. Generate again is what draws a fresh set of sentences. That is deliberate: it stops the paragraph you were looking at from vanishing every time you tick a box.
